Fecking robbing landlords...

Oh dear. Having to practice my room fixing skills again this year. Didn't mind when I was paying £52 a week, but for £80 a week this prison cell is a bit much. Had to do some D.I.Y. draft-proofing, because apparently its a good idea to put a weird cupboard that backs onto the outside of the house and has no insulation next to a bed, so all night a freezing breeze blows over your face. Nice one! Anyway, the sheet from toga night in first year is doing a decent job now at fixing the shoddy workmanship this house is full of.

Had my first Christmas dinner of the season yesterday, next one on Thursday. Good times. Would like to be at home now, got hardly any more desire to work left. Not good when theres still a week to go and plenty to be done. Ah well. Also have the distraction of what the hell I'm going to be doing next year to worry about. All the stuff I'm interested in doesn't start happening til after Christmas though, so plenty of thinking and not a lot of action on the horizon which is never good.

Come on holidays!

NEXT SUMMER!

Got my summer sorted out for next year. Not only is Costa Rica booked up, but also a trip through Guatemala, Belize and Mexico at the end for good measure. The project ain't going well, I don't know what I'm doing after I graduate but at least I shall have a good trip to look forward to!

On Reflection

The 3-and-a-half weeks I spent in the USA were unforgettable for me. Honestly it was the greatest experience of my life. I was lucky with my travelling companions, the weather and to be visiting some the best places the country has to offer. I was massively unlucky with my camera, and I did feel that some places were missed out that could have been amazing due to bad organisation and timing from the tour company, but overall it was amazing. I drank too much Budweiser, ate too many McDonalds and slept too many times in a tent but in return I have seen and done things that people should want to kill for.

San Francisco - Last day!

Got up early for a trip out to Muir Woods to see the Redwoods, which was cool. Sadly the tour bus was full of elderly couples so just a little bit awkward! On the way back we stopped at Sausalito, which was a bit boring and expensive for me but some decent views of the bay. Drove over the Golden Gate Bridge on the way out however, which wasn't too shabby.
Got back and swapped my voucher for a ticket for the boat tour, was very hungry however so hit McDonalds first. Boat wasn't as good as the one in New York, but the fog didn't really help. Got a nice look at Alcatraz, surprising just how close it is to the city.
After that I wandered Fishermans Wharf. Saw the sealions, hit the Bubba Gump shop but failed in my quest for cheap Levis. Took an epic trek back to the hostel which took in a heck of a lot of those famous hills, Lombard street and Union Square. Went in Macy's for the crack - couldn't even afford pyjama bottoms there. Had an early night in the hostel (sadly Brenda our possibly lesbian, elderly Australian roomate had left) because that was it for my big USA adventure. Sad times.

Took an uneventful ride back to the airport only to find out that my flight to LA was cancelled. Ended up on a non-stop flight back to Heathrow. Was awake for over 30 hours that day - watched many a film on the way back. The Hangover, Kung-Fu Panda 2, Ratatouille, The Beaver and Paul. Sadly United don't have many to chose from (I think there were only 7 films) and no free booze, but I got home two hours earlier than planned and they didn't lose my bag - plus.

Yosemitie - San Francisco

Last day with everyone there, bit sad really! Had our last supper at an In 'n' Out Burger, true Californian spirit...apparently. Got to say first impressions of San Fran were a bit underwhelming, might have been because I managed to book a youth hostel in the Tenderloin (people with actual pimp sticks and two druggies arguing because one wouldn't have sex with the other one). Most of us met up for one last time at night to go out for a meal in Chinatown. It was pretty amazing. Think I paid about $10 for everything, and the plate of food was too big to finish. Tons of meat as well, best beef in black bean sauce I've tasted. Real stuff, not salty take-away crap.

Bishop - Yosemitie

It tells you how good some of the other national parks we went to were when I saw Yosemitie wasn't too mind-blowing at first. Actually, thats a bit of a lie really. We stopped for lunch on a 'beach' there. Mountains the background, clear blue lake and sand. Not bad really!

On the second day there we went for a little hike, only 8 or 9 miles - no sweat. Apart from half way round a massive thunder storm started. Got absolutely soaked through. Was pretty good feeling when we finished though, and there are some amazing waterfalls and mountains there. Campsite was a bit shite. Apparently its very hard to get a camping site in the park itself, no idea why. Bit of a dump really. Toilets stink, no hand-gel (hygiene yay) and bog roll seemed to be at a premium.

Vegas - Bishop

Bishop is a random place in the middle of nowhere near the Sierra Nevada mountains. They are pretty spectacular, the area is a bit dull. Massive change coming from Vegas. Saw some pretty good views though. Don't think we did much more than that, but could be wrong...getting old now and the memory ain't what it used to be!

Las Vegas

Day 18 - After all those natural wonders it was time for some man-made ones. Running off memory now because I never wrote anything else after this point. First day in Vegas started off so well, drove through the main strip and saw all those places you see in films. Got to the hotel, it was pretty nice. Just chilled, then went out for a meal at the Hard Rock Cafe. Had something which contained spicy chicken if my memory serves me correctly, and it was pretty damn good. Afterwards we stocked up on booze then waited for the worlds biggest limo to come and pick up all 36-odd people doing the tour.
After that - sadly things went downhill (didn't feel it at the time though!). We toured the town, hit the Vegas sign and went to Cesars Palace and the nightclub there. Got slightly inebriated and returned home. Woke up the next morning - no camera. Shit.

Day 19 - Spent the morning trying to track down my camera, no joy. I now know the true feeling of being 'gutted'. With one week left I had lost a load of amazing pictures of amazing places and good people - what an idiot. Still, had to carry on and enjoy what was left of my time there. Wandered a few more casinos during the day including the MGM (lions), New York New York (surreal), and also hit the Miracle Mile which is the weirdest shopping centre on the planet. The ceiling is painted to look like the sky, and its really very good.

In the evening we went again for a slightly quiet night. The plan was to go up the Stratosphere, but thanks to lightning storms that got scuppered. On the way back up the strip we caught the show at Treasure Island (the amount of money that must go into that for a free show), sussed out the lies at the Venetian (the gondolas are electric, the half-arsed punting is quite funny though) and finished off watching the Bellagio fountains. They are pretty spectacular. Tried to go up the Eiffel tower at Paris, but the lightning stopped us again. Settled for a go on a slot machine there. All I'll say is I put $1 in and got $2.25 back. High roller, but I left Vegas up which I guess most people don't get to say!

Grand Canyon

Full day at the Canyon. Set off early for yet another sunrise, it was a bloody one however. Reading through my notes I see how often we got up at 5/6 in the morning and how little I seemed to care - its al worth it if you get to do things like this. Afterwards we went for our epic hike into the canyon. The four of us bravely hit the Bright Angel trail down to the first rest stop - then went back up again. The heat in there is amazing. Apparently its 30 degrees hotter at the bottom of the canyon than the top, we barely went in but on the way back up we were definitely feeling it. 1.5 miles of slog coming back up.
Afterwards we thought we'd check out the Visitor Centre, because apparently it was full of stuff. Seriously, I think the leader was making stuff up as we went along. The place was empty. Definitely not worth the slog up.
In the afternoon we went for a helicopter flight over the canyon, that was the quickest 50 minutes of my life. Absolutely amazing, its going to take a lot to beat that in the future.
Had some good nights camping, doing marshmallows around the fire. Good times baby.

On the way out to Vegas stopped off at Seligman, Arizona. Route 66 in a town. Loads of weird cars with faces and shops selling crap with 66 on it. Went in the shop of Angel Delgadillo (this bloke) and generally had a good time!

Monument Valley - Grand Canyon

After breakfast in the Valley we set off for the Grand Canyon. Stopped off on the way at the point where Forrest Gump ends his massive run, there is actually a sign to mark the point. They do know it wasn't a true story right?
Left behind the blue skies and orange rocks of Monument Valley and headed off to the Grand Canyon, cos obviously we hadn't had enough amazing scenery for the past few days.
Arrived in time to catch the sunset. Its a weird place the Grand Canyon. I couldn't get my head around how big it was - its that wide it just looks like a flat painting or something. Moose Elk are almost as big.

Mesa Verde - Monument Valley

The second amazing place in a week where we were massively spoilt. I though Mesa Verde was good, Monument Valley is off the chart. On the way we stopped off at four corners, was in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona all the same time - well worth $3....
We took a jeep tour around the but of Monument Valley you see if you whack it in google. Its crazy, the red-ness just doesn't seem real. All the colours are too vivid really. Theres a real vibe about the place. The views can't be equalled I don't think. After the tour we rocked up for some steak and 'Navajo tacos'. Awesome. After eating we climbed up high to watch the sunset then had some authentic dancing (it was for all I know anyway) to pass the evening. Got all involved like a real sociable person dancing round the fire - what an experience. A certain member of the group sat out the looking like a dick part - her loss man. Heard some stories, listened to some music - that was the good bit. The music definately has a kind of 'timeless' vibe to it. You're sat there in the dark, in a part of the world with no electricity or water, with a fire burning and no-one else in sight. Crazy.
Instead of putting up tents we put the sleeping mats out and slept under the stars. Absolutely no light pollution so you could see everything. Will take a lot to beat that experience.
Up early to catch the sunrise, again absolutely amazing.

Santa Fe - Mesa Verde

I was vaguely aware of what Mesa Verde was from pictures my Dad took when he went there when he was but a lad (maybe a bit younger than me). Still, was pretty blown away when we got there and had the first look at the cliff houses and the valley. You just don't get stuff like that in the UK! We took a trip around part of the site with a crazy ranger lady which involved climbing up ladders and crawling through holes - proper adventure baby. Well, not really. Again the low physical health standards of the USA overstated things a bit.
In the evening hit the local bowling alley, Labor day baby. The beer did taste like water however. No San Miguel.

Carlsbad - Santa Fe (via Roswell)

Got a proper look in the caves. Absolutely amazing place. The size of the place is just crazy, one of the highlights of the trip for sure. Spent a good long time walking around, although it wasn't too strenuous no matter what all the signs claimed. Americans seem to have very low standards when it comes to walking. This was also home to the worlds greatest postcard. After all, when you've visited an amazing natural wonder what else would you send home to your loved ones to mark the occassion than a postcard of the lunch room? Seriously. They were selling them.
On our way to Santa Fe we stopped off in Rowell. The place is full of mentals. Alien related stuff everywhere, even the street lamps had little alien faces on them. Still, a nice place for a break and to see some amazingly geeky bumper stickers on the theme of quantum mechanics. Should probably have bought one thinking about it.
Had lunch at some shabby zoo type place where random birds were just roaming free. Not great conditions. Weird country.
Didn't go anywhere in Santa Fe. I think we were meant to, but any little trips like that which didn't involve the 'group leader' having a drink didn't seem to have high priority.

Houston - Carlsbad Caverns

First proper taste of the amazing countryside that New Mexico has to offer. What a place. Absolutely unreal scenery. Again, my scribbled notes aren't making much sense - this was when we went to the Alamo to look through the gate. Silly me.
Set up camp at Carlsbad then went up a pretty amazing road to catch the bat flight. Bats where a bit short in numbers, but was still a good experience. There were probably more bats flying around the campsite than there were coming out the cave, but oh well.
Survived a night in a campsite with racoons with a hole next to my face in the tent. Add to that a crazy wind which blew someone elses tent down in the night, and the fact I'm still alive is nothing short of a miracle really.

Houston - San Antonio

Ah bugger. Got a bit trigger happy there. This was the day we went to NASA. Can't be arsed to modify.
Got a look at the outside of the Alamo. Got behind schedule somewhere along the way which led to very half-arsed attempts at most things in Texas, which was a shame. Will have to go back at some point and have a proper look.
Night in a Kamping Kabin, can you see what they did there?

New Orleans - Houston

Up bright and early for a swamp tour,as you do. Pretty damn good, even if we did get torrential rain on the way back. Ah well, what else are tarpaulins for? Saw a good few gators, a nice big one and plenty of smaller critters. Not too sure about using hot-dogs and marshmallows to lure them out, but what an experience.
Got down to Houston a bit later than would have been ideal which meant not much time at NASA. Missed out on the tour behind the scenes but got a look at a shuttle cockpit, space-suit which had BEEN ON THE MOON and the amazing gift shop. After it, it's not rocket science. Oh wait, yes it is. They are a bunch of comedians.
Spent the night in a bunkhouse. Got top bunk, slightly hairy cos there was no ladder and no sides but there was the worlds most slippery matress. Survived the night anyway and got my first sighting of a real life armadillo. Thank you Texas.

Days 8 & 9 - New Orleans

What a city. Amazing place.

Day 8 - A heck of a lot of driving to get there from Memphis. Amazing scenery on the way though, all of a sudden it goes from hedges and trees to swamps. Never seen anything like it before. Good, friendly place to be. Went out, first hit a bar with $1 pints (you listening Nashville?) then just wandered the streets taking in the sites with them - legally. Got a first sighting of the Missisippi river (that must be spelt wrong - apologies) and many other things.

Ate out and had the best meal I've had in my life. 'Blackened Chicken Po-Boy'. Ah man, even the chips were spicy! Cajun food is amazing. Got to go back to that part of the world just for a snack. Afterwards went for a night out on Bourbon Street. Crazy place, just one non-stop party. Alcohol everywhere. Tried me a 'hand-grenade' then took up the offer of 3 for 1 beers, would be rude not to!

Day 9 - Got a proper look at the city. Bloody hot again, amazing weather round those parts! Had a look at the Aquarium with the white alligator (saw a bit of it anyway!) and some pretty cool penguins...no pun intended. Took the ferry over the river, so I can now say I've been on the Mississipi proper! Spotted another Bubba Gumps, those crazy Americans think thats a factual film I think. Checked out the Voodoo Museum, crazy cats. Back at the hotel (amazing after a week in tents) we got us probably the worst take-out you could ever want. All part of the fun!

Nashville - Memphis

Yet again got into town too late to do much more than go to Graceland, which was good, but that was all we saw of Memphis. I think by this point people were starting to get a bit annoyed with the trip. Lots of stuff in the description they give you, don't expect to do half of it! It would have been nice to have a night on the town, but we'd have to get taxis which were bloody expensive. Quite annoying when we had someone who was meant to be driving us, it wasn't their day off and Beale Street was part of the itinerary! Luck of the draw I guess.

Graceland is fairly awesome though. Elvis was not a man afraid to spend money. Gold plated seatbelts on your own private plane, thats bling. Didn't know he had a little whizzier number either which apparently was used once to send his dog to the vets. Thats service.
Tea was pretty good, went to some place called Marlows for some rather good BBQ food. Think mine was pork, to be honest it all got a bit overshadowed by the pink cadillac the place sent out to pick us up in!

Virginia - Nashville

Sadly didn't get into Nashville anywhere near early enough to see any of the town by daylight which was shame seeing as the trip notes claim you can get down to the Country Music Hall of Fame, Grand Ole Oprey etc. Had a good night out on the town though, never thought people actually wore cowboy hats as normal clothing. Went to the Wild Horse Saloon which was a bit dear on the drinks front ($4 + tip for one bottle? Jog on mate) but had free air hockey so can't complain too much! Watched some attempts at line dancing, then wandered around trying to find somewhere else that let in under 21s, I think we failed there and went back to camp.

DC - Virginia

Not a hectic day, mainly travelling. Went by part of the Appalachian mountains, can't say it was too impressive. Nice view, but so many trees you kind of lose the impact. Went on the worlds most pathetic 'hike' which took about 20 minutes max (never did rain which was the excuse for not doing the proper one). Blue Ridge Parkway, Peak of Otter apparently. Very few notes for this day!

Day 4 - Maryland to DC

Got to say I wasn't too impressed by Washington DC. Its just one big monument, no soul there at all. Did all the obvious stuff like the White House, Washington monument, WW2 memorial, Lincoln memorial, old Post Office etc. Took in a couple of Smithsonian museums on the search for food and air conditioning (rediculously hot day). Think we went for the museums of American and Natural history. Was a bit dissapointed by the reflecting pool seeing as it was mainly just a big muddy hole with portaloos in. Definitely not how it looked in Forrest Gump!

Day 3 - New York to Maryland somewhere!

Just about outran Hurrican Irene. First proper day with the group - got very lucky there. It was a very good group of folks, no crazy drama queens or party monsters, on the whole just a good sociable bunch worth a few laughs!
Trip to Philadelphia was a bit of a damp squib in more ways than one. Thanks to the hurricane coming in it was bucketing down so no sightseeing done. Did hit a decent food hall though, got introduce to the Philly Cheese steak, was a bit too much cheese there for my liking though so didn't sample one.

Campsite was pretty much nicer than my house. It had a hot-tub, gym, pool - amazing. Spent a chilled evening round the camp drinking beer and chatting shit. Good times.

USA - The Report

Been back for quite a while now and haven't got round to writing up this rather wonderful little holiday I had. Will make a start now, probably won't finish it but we'll see.

Day 1 - 27 hours of being awake, the airline that makes Ryanair look quality and New York

The trip got off to a rather un-auspicious start when I made my first contact with Alitalia. This was my first mistake. Theirs was the first flight of the day out of Heathrow, what could possibly go wrong there? Mainly their staff. These guys make the treatment you get on Ryanair seem like you're royalty and they are your private staff. It took four people half an hour to check me in. Four. Their reason for that? 'I've been on holiday, how should I know?' followed by a shrug of the shoulders. Sorry luv, but you are working for an international airline at one of the biggest international airports and you don't know how to check someone in to the states? How long was this holiday, 20 years?
Flight set off late, and thanks to a fellow A-Team fan and top bloke at Rome and an epic sprint I managed to make the connection. Sadly it would later turn out that my luggage wasn't quite as lucky. Ah well, here was my first trans-atlantic flight. To be honest it wasn't too bad, there was a good selection of films to watch, the food was just about edible and alcoholic beverages were free (I should have indulged really, things weren't going to go smoothly). My only complaint would be the state of the toilets - could definitely have done with a bit of Cif round them.
Anyway, as we near New York a faint message comes over the tannoy - we aren't landing at JFK. Oh no. We're going to Boston. No explanation for this, and again the shrugging of the shoulders every time a question is asked comes out. Either its an Italian thing, or the standard Alitalia response to something. Turns out that just before we were due to land airspace was closed over NY thanks to an earthquake. I heard several more colourful stories from people who were ringing random relatives whilst we sat on the runway in Boston and waited to be told anything about what the plan was.
About 5 hours after I was meant to land, I finally made it to New York. Another smiling, customer focused member of staff informed me that I could either wait in the luggage reclaim for my bag (after more than 24 hours of being up, not having anything to eat or drink for a fair while and being left thinking where the hell is Boston anyway) or the airline would send it out the next evening. This struck me as being a load of shit, it was the airlines fault they screwed up, so why do I have to wait for them? Anyway, I left the shrivelled up old bitch to argue with some rather more vocal Americans whose bags had taken their time in turning up and dreamt of bed.
After an uneventful sky train and subway ride, I found the hostel. Not a bad location, rooms weren't fantastic but was too knackered to care.

Day 2 - Top of the Rock, wandering Hell's Kitchen, Circle Line tour and Times Square
After bugger all sleep I was up early to get to the top of the Rock for 9 am, seemed like a good idea at the time! Got my first taste of spending weird American coinage at a farmers market (as you do in the middle of a city). Pretty decent view from up there. At some point I will sort out some pictures, but thats another story. Can't say I was blown away - one city looks the same as all the others to me. Central Park was pretty cool and rectangular, they do love blocks in NY.

Far more impressive for me was the boat tour I took. I had started to regret going for the full 3 hour trip, but very glad I did. Pretty much the best way of seeing NY in my opinion. Saw most of the main buildings, lots of bridges and the Yankee stadium. Not bad! Tour guide bloke was pretty good too, I think I learnt and forgot soon after more stuff about America from that one trip than in most of my life. You also wouldn't believe how many trees there are on the route of the loop. Got a sighting of a concord in as well, which was nice if a bit sad.

Spent the rest of the day wandering backwards and forwards through 'Hell's Kitchen', definitely not as dramatic as it sounds. Think I was around Broadway, headed up to Central Park and hit 'Strawberry Fields'. Very strange place. Full of drunken hippies and snap-happy tourists. For the evening I wandered a bit further down to Times Square - crazy place. Got my first sighting of a Bubba Gump shop, they are pretty great. Finished off the day with a trip to Grand Central station. Pretty impressive for a subway!

Few hours left to go...

About to get myself into bed to try and get a few hours of sleep before my epic journey tomorrow, will be leaving no later than 1.30 in the morning...got at least 24 hours to be awake for after that. Lets hope I've not forgotten anything...

The final countdown

Off to America Monday night! Technically the flights at 0600 on Tuesday, but having to leave at about 2 in the 'morning' to get there. Can't believe its come round so quick. Need to sort clothes/baggage out but apart from that ready to go!

Today marks 5 years of having the hairy dog in the house - thats gone quick as well. Can't imagine the house without her in it any more. Fairly sure if she wasn't here, I definitely wouldn't be. Had enough of the bloody teenagers and their whinging, whining ways. Its like having two little kids in the house, apart from ones nearly 16 and the other nearly 20. Ah well. At least I have the dog. Feel bad for leaving her behind to go off on my little adventure, but what can you do? All part of getting old.

Anyway, here is a song that is quite good:

Also hoping that my fantasy football team improves its score a bit over the weekend, on 8 so far. Bit weak.

Nowt much to say

New project - not too bad. Don't really understand what it is about, but could be pretty interesting. Potentially. Hope it is anyway, got a lot riding on next year if I want my 1st (which I do!).

Not long now til USA. Getting a bit scary, not sure what the hell I'm going to do for over 10 hours on a plane. Got bored going to Berlin which was a 1.5 hour flight, not the best sign! Got all my gear for going now. Not one but TWO waterproof bags, walking shoes, backpack - we are oficially good to go.

Catching up on the new series of Breaking Bad. Not too bad so far, not catching me as quickly as past series though. Hopefully its building up to something big though. Definitely not terrible but could be better. Bought two tickets for Noel Gallagher this morning. Sad thing is I doubt I'll be going as three of us want to go, which is a bit sad. Steep prices for crap seats, very annoying that decent seats are already turning up on Seatwave, not even looked at ebay yet as its too depressing.

New Noel Gallagher tune - not bad

Tried not getting too interested in the first song to be released from Noel's first solo album after the massive disappointment that was Beady Eye. Have to say however I was pleasantly surprised. Not a brilliant tune, but not bad. The lyrics are a bit weak in places but that dirty muted trumpet or whatever it is more than makes up for that. Just goes to show that Liam is a brilliant front man, but without Noel's songs he ain't up to much. Got through about 15 mins of Beady Eye at the Japan benefit before I had to leave through sheer boredom. Anyway, looking forward to hearing the rest of what Noel's been up to.

Got all my gear and documents now for my trip to the USA, getting a bit near now. This time next month I'll be well on my way. Had a little practice trip to Berlin last week. Nice enough city, but its all looking back there. Got a bit depressing after a while. Didn't find the people particularly charming either, bit of a miserable bunch. Next stop Cadiz and 38 degrees of heat, not good!

Planning a rough itinerary for a trip to Europe next summer. Want to take in some of the countries I've not been to yet (which is quite a few). Hopefully a month will be enough because I'm not sure I can commit much more time/money than that.

Never been much of a Clash fan, but this is a great tune.

Two more days in Durham

Would like to be at home right now with dog and the chicks. End of term rot is definitely setting in. Weird to think theres people I might never see again now.

Wish I was feeling as mellow as this song is.

Another boring night in...

Man I'm doing this all wrong really. Had a pretty down day, getting itchy feet and an itchy brain. Want to go out and do something new, but making do with some Koppaberg and posh Peroni (going right up in the world). Got far too excited by finding 1/2 pint Peroni glasses in Tesco for a mere quid. Will be taking the party downstairs soon to partake in some shit TV and further alcohol. Grazie.

Oh the terrible irony.

Generic young person talk

Wish I had a load of money, a load of time and no family to think about. So many places out there that need visiting. Would love to be able to just book a flight and travel, but things are never that easy. Would be nice to have someone to go with, but that doesn't look very likely right now or anytime soon. Would be nice to just take a year or two to do it properly, but again thats not in the plan right now. No idea how people manage it, I guess you have to decide to either get your life set up or to just go see the world. Got one more year at university, then its either job or phd. Won't have the money this time next year to do any real travel. Gah.

Not much point to this. Just been looking at places to go and thinking it would be pretty damn great to just get out there and do something.

I done be good at chemistry!

Third year - done. On the right side of the pass list, so heres to another year of working my arse off! Apparently the marks have got lost somewhere between being released by the department and turning up in my account, so not sure what the damage is yet. Still, I'm celebrating with San Miguel and some classic tunes.

Happy days.

Desert Island Discs - 14/06/11

Some list came out with the most popular songs submitted by the 'public' for their own Desert Island Discs - they were mostly crap and very indicitive of the middle-class old men that make up most of the Radio 4 audience. Its an important list to make in life however, so here is my attempt at the 8 songs that I could never get bored of.

1. Billy Bragg - A New England
2. Bob Dylan - Like A Rolling Stone
3. Pogues - A Rainy Night In Soho
4. Talking Heads - Once In A Lifetime
5. Otis Redding - Cigarettes & Coffee
6. James - Out To Get You
7. Johnny Cash - Sunday Morning Coming Down
8. Manic Street Preachers - Motorcycle Emptiness

In no particular order. Lots and lots of other possibles...but I think this is pretty good for now.

Monday, 13 June 2011

Monday again

The start of another week with nothing to do and no purpose in life, not bad is it? Would be good to be working though...as in earning money working, not paying money to do work working. Money. What an annoying thing that is. Hopefully July will be money-month, or else I'm buggered.

Project looks good for next year - carbon nanotubes and that. Could be much, much worse. Its actual proper work though, not like the teaching labs so that could be a bit of culture shock. Three years gone already, theoretically I'm a university graduate - just without the degree. Done all the work for it, but that darn integrated masters gets in the way! Terrifying to think I could be out there in the real world working now for the rest of my life. Lets keep this student lark up for as long as possible eh?

Should probably be going through my German stuff, but to be honest I've learn the best word, and that is fünf. What a word.

Should probably whack some music up eh? What to be this time. I guess seeing as my main route to watching Summer Heights High is about to go I should pay tribute.

Friday, 10 June 2011

One word: ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH

Ah man. Things are pretty messed up at the mo. Lots of stuff going down that I don't want going down, and my attempts at pulling out are pretty much failing.

Other sad news - SeeSaw is biting the dust, watching Summer Heights High again in a kind of tribute. Can see how it wouldn't work as a business, but really was handy for finding stuff and not having to trawl through all the different TV channel websites.

Booked up some more tickets, Athlete (although that might no happen thanks to shit getting real) and the Ben & Jerry's festival - Ocean Colour Scene, Ash and Fun Lovin' Criminals. Not too bad for the money. Sadly don't think I'm going to be able to offload the Wireless tickets, people are selling them at a loss of about £20 a ticket, madness. Would love to see Pulp but the rest of the lineup sucks, and its a long trek and expensive price to see one band do a shorter festival set. Nothings going right at the minute.

Should really be trying to word an e-mail in the nicest way possible. Don't want to have to do it, but my best efforts to be subtle failed.

Psychoville is finished again, which is quite sad. Wasn't so keen on this series compared to the first one, most of the new characters were a bit rubbish compared to the old ones (who didn't really have to all be killed off now did they?). One thing it did do right though was that it gave the world Mrs. Ladybird Face. I was laughing out loud every bloody time she was on screen. Classic.

Got to be off soon to find out what my project is for next year, lets hope its good!

Three weeks til Summer!

Got a good easy three weeks left in Durham until the holiday. Not much going on yet, got some brass band, possibly some kayaking and Deutsch lessons to work around. Hopefully will be hitting beer-fest tomorrow, sounds like a good wholesome way to spend a Sunday.
Been thinking about what to do after next year, at the minute I think a phd is looking like the best option, although worryingly I'm starting to get itchy feet. Seriously considering going abroad, New Zealand could be an option. Something to think about anyway.

All registered for next year, just need to see my project guy at some point so that I can find out what it is I'm actually doing, so thats something exciting to look forward to...more work...

Need some money! Come on premium bonds, do your thing!

Finished!

Third year...done! Last exam this morning, hit the pub, phoned the family and tidied up the place. Pretty darn productive. Chilling now, have a bit of Shuggie Otis:

Half-way through...

Was pretty good today, yesterday wasn't too bad but not brilliant. In summary: exams going OK so far. Lets listen to the Pet Shop Boys to celebrate:

Thank you university

Just in case you aren't sure how to stack books in number order and put them inside number 1...now it all becomes clear!

Monday, 16 May 2011

...and they're off!

One down, five to go. Not too bad today, could have been better but could have been a heck of a lot worse. Organic and Core Chem 3 Paper 2 to go this week. Been listening to a strange mix of 90's dance music and soul of late. They make interesting bedfellows.

A variation on the last post! Anyway, back to the SoCo and coke, Aretha, and then Childrens Craniofacial Surgery, as you do.

Less than two weeks to go!

Been another day of revising...however good news is that I should at least be able to sleep now! Thanks to a £3.50 piece of blackout curtain lining off ebay and a roll of masking tape, it is no longer full daylight in my room at 5 in the morning!
Feeling almost positive about this first exam, kind of hoping all the others are alright still. Won't be missing all this sodding work though, but the calming tones of the likes of Sam Cooke are really helping:

Tuesday, 10 May 2011

I hate exams.

Going through past papers...not good. Don't even understand what half the questions are asking, but then I'm stuck using old papers that don't really apply any more, which just adds to the fun. I do especially enjoy questions though where you have never been given any kind of suggestion of how to answer it, no problems if its a nice, straightforward everyday kind of question, but if its one the verging on edge of biology questions and its worth 6 marks but takes an hour to do...where the hell do you start? I hope I can skip natural product biosynthesis. Its one of those where you think you understand it...but have no hope in hell of answering the question. I am very depressed now. Other stuff I've done today should come together (I hope) by next week...although Organic will always be there in the back of my mind mocking me.

I wish it was June!

Saturday, 7 May 2011

Another boring exam period Saturday night...

Not long til the facking exams start, cannot wait. Got to keep thinking about the good things that come after! Might book onto a beginners German course for June...might as well do something useful with the four weeks I've got to spend up here with nothing to do. Then theres always the thought of the New Inn at approximately 12.30 on the 26th May when the final exam is done and dusted. Of course then its the holidays...family trip to Cadiz and the epic trip across America. Hopefully some time back at work, earn a bit of money and catch up. Yeah. Got a few good things going on in life. Of course, the crap stuff tends to overshadow all that but it does at least put exams into perspective.

Next Summer!

London - Costa Rica (Two weeks) - New York - Kuching, Borneo (Two Weeks) - London

Think thats the most efficient way of doing things! Better start saving up...

On second thoughts, that costs way more. Going to have to hit Heathrow twice...which is a shame.

Shitting organic labs...

...slipped in a cheeky 78%, not bad going! Those have to be guilt marks for giving us an unworkable project...

On to drinking copious amounts of energy drink and revising physical chemistry!

Finally the USA does something right!

US stem cell research funding ban lifted by court

Terrifying really the amount of power that country has in terms of scientific research when you consider the amount of say religious groups and conservatives who know nothing about have in such matters. Stem cells could be one of the most important areas of research in the coming years, and it could all have been messed up on account of crazy right-wingers thinking its 'cruel'. Heres to common sense winning through! An embryo isn't a sentient form of life, and it might never be whether or not it is used in stem cell research. The more research can be done and the more the whole area is understood, the more likely it will be to find a less ethically sensitive way of achieving the same end result. Fact of the matter is that some of the research so far is showing great promise for many, many people around the world who are having to live with disabilities/illness that as of now have no other treatment.

Victory for science! "Opponents, who include religious groups, argue that the research is unethical and illegal." Since when should religious groups have any influence over scientific research? Worrying. People should stick to what they know.

Bloody plane crashes - why is only ever the ones with talent?

Monday, 25 April 2011

All paid up!

Made the last payment off my trip to the USA just now, how exciting! Got everything booked up now - all the accomodation in New York and San Francisco and a few little touristy bits on the first and last days. All I need to do now is sort out what I'm taking and get out there!

Made another impulse buy - a Creative Vado mini-video camera. Might come in handy, for £40 though figured it was worth a punt. Watch this space. Sadly I'm back up in Durham though so not much to try it out on, at least back home theres the dog and the chicks. Ah well. All in good time.

Bye-bye Spotify

It was inevitable really, Spotify has gone the way of Premium or shit. I've had an account with them since they introduced the beta in the UK and finally I've had enough. It was an amazing service, a huge amount of new music to discover and for free, thats what I signed up for. Now they have made the wonderful decision of limiting all free accounts (not just the newer ones which were limited anyway) and putting a block on tracks you play more than 5 times. Brilliant. Not all of us can afford to pay out £10 a month to access something you don't get to keep. I can understand the free accounts get in the way of profit, so why not just stop taking any more free accounts and let those who built up their service carry on? Ah well. Its not like there are no other options out there. Hit Grooveshark today on the search for Getting Away With It...Live by James. Not on Spotify, but managed to find it there. Got the CD on order but in the meantime I'm enjoying it through this playlist:

Brilliant band.

Wireless fails again

What the hell made the good people from Pulp book the sodding Wireless festival? They've proven that they can't handle getting together a good line-up that doesn't feature a never ending stream of chav bands. Really, really pissed off right now. The second act on the bill is GRACE JONES. Seriously? What the hell. There are plenty of washed-up yet decent bands from the Britpop era out there - it wouldn't take a genius to try them. Fact is that if they aren't played on Kiss they don't exist at that festival. Wish I could offload that ticket, but would love to see Pulp. Over £50 to only see one band, sucks.

Not much happening in life apart from revision, and theres not too much of that going down. Third year exams nearly coming, should probably be a bit more urgency about it. Ah well. Got my trip to USA to look forward to, and then plans for a trip to Costa Rica next year. Hopefully I can fit that in before getting a job or something over the summer. No idea what the plan is after next year. Hopefully will all become clear.

Catching up again!

day 20 - a song that you listen to when you’re angry

Johnny Cash - One
Nice and soothing, unlike Bono's whining.

day 21 - a song that you listen to when you’re happy

Northside - Shall We Take A Trip?
Bass guitar!

day 22 - a song that you listen to when you’re sad

Proclaimers - Long Black Veil
Real nice version. Pisses all over 1000 Miles.

day 23 - a song that you want to play at your wedding

Black Grape - Reverend Black Grape
I think this would go down nicely yeah? In all honesty, I have no idea. A wedding is a very long way away in my life. Lets just enjoy some music which is a bit anti-religion yeah? Or whatever it is. Its Black Grape.

day 24 - a song that you want to play at your funeral

Jackie Wilson - (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher & Higher
Could make that the dress code too. If its dreary and boring, I'll be coming back to haunt people as my gran would say.

day 25 - a song that makes you laugh

Ian Dury - Reasons To Be Cheerful
Doesn't really make me laugh...but raises a smile at the very least.

day 26 - a song that you can play on an instrument

Stone Roses - Waterfall
Can just about whack that out on the old guitar. Capo 4th fret.

day 27 - a song that you wish you could play

Carly Simon - Nobody Does It Better
Probably could play this on the ole piano, but without the music it just won't happen. Add to that actually any string arrangement from any James Bond theme. Being able to do that bit from You Only Live Twice would be almost worth the pain of having to learn the violin or whatever it is.

day 28 - a song that makes you feel guilty

Talking Heads - Once In A Lifetime
No song makes me feel guilty, I don't understand that. Love this song though and wanted to shoe-horn it in somewhere.

day 29 - a song from your childhood

Billy Joel - River Of Dreams
Not from my childhood time, but remember mum playing it a lot when I was but a child cos shes a big fan of Billy's for some reason. Always remember this song from when I was little...this and the Superman song. Most of the music I was exposed to as a child was cack.

Psychoville is a great TV programme.

Saturday, 19 March 2011

Good night last night, do miss the life and the folks when I'm back home. Got five weeks of boredom ahead of me now, cannot wait! The parents are on their way up, my bedding is in the washing machine and the sun is shining. What a morning.

Thats all the education I'm getting as a third year chemist! I could be graduated in a few months. Terrifying.

day 19 - a song from your favourite album

Stereophonics - Traffic
(From Word Gets Around)
Such a brilliant debut album, could listen to it all day. Love this song, and it always goes down a treat live.
"Waits tables for a crook, who wrote a hard-back book"

Could have just started yesterday on day 1, but following along with some mateys who started on the first of the month. Just in case thats an important fact to know...

Friday, 18 March 2011

This has been popping up on my facebook for the past few days, so thought I might as well do my own version. Obviously got a few days to catch up on, so here goes the bumper edition:

day 01 - your favourite song

Noel Gallager (Oasis) - Half The World Away
I have many favourite songs, but this was a bit special. Awesome night, you wouldn't get this reaction from many b-sides - even the claps are perfect. Got some good words too.

day 02 - your least favorite song
Aw, I'm not going to ruin this blog with terrible music. Lets just say I hate pretty much anything that would get played on Kiss or Capital.

day 03 - a song that makes you happy

James - Laid
Happy song with stupid words!

day 04 - a song that makes you sad

Radiohead - No Surprises
Nice song, but a fairly depressing band.

day 05 - a song that reminds you of someone

Johnny Cash - Sunday Morning Coming Down
My Dad laughs at this every time, cos he is convinced that Johnny forgets the word at 'frying chicken'. I don't hear it myself, but there you go!

day 06 - a song that reminds you of somewhere

Stereophonics - More Life In A Tramps Vest
Used to listen to Word Gets Around when I was down in the stockroom on my own working in Argos. Takes me back to a summer spent indoors humping boxes!

day 07 - a song that reminds you of a certain event

Manic Street Preachers - Motorcycle Emptiness
Took my mum to see this rather brilliant band live, this is one of her favourite songs and hearing it takes me back to her happy little face when the intro kicked in. Aww, soppy but a good moment in life. Amazing live band too.

day 08 - a song that you know all the words to

Billy Bragg - A New England
Do like these words, shame the bloke can't shut up about his politics. Should just be about the music man!

day 09 - a song that you can dance to

James - Come Home
I've got the bends from PRESSURE!

day 10 - a song that makes you fall asleep

Mercury Rev - Opus 40
Nice and chilled.

day 11 - a song from your favorite band

Oasis - Live Forever
Don't really have a favourite band any more, but these used to be it.

day 12 - a song from a band you hate

U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday
Good music from a band who do my head in. Shut up Bono and play the bloody song.

day 13 - a song that is a guilty pleasure

Pet Shop Boys - Go West
The gayest song ever, but its bloody awesome.

day 14 - a song that no one would expect you to love

Highwaymen - Highwayman
Haha, can't get enough of this.

day 15 - a song that describes you

Young Rascals - Groovin'
I am just chilled. Mostly.

day 16 - a song that you used to love but now hate
I'll repeat myself, not putting anything negative here!

day 17 - a song that you hear often on the radio

OMC - How Bizarre
Tells you all you need to know about the kind of radio station I listen to...

day 18 - a song that you wish you heard on the radio

Inspiral Carpets - She Comes In The Fall
Always gets me moving this one!

/End marathon

Just had my memory jogged...

Meant to post this the other day, came on my player on shuffle when I was walking down to lectures and it blew me away all over again:

Theres only one Johnny Cash! Not very original bigging up this cover, but theres a reason people hype it up. Pure emotion. Video is pretty stunning too.

Should be studying harder...

Penultimate night of the term in the D-Land, sat enjoying a nicely chilled can of Kopparberg (inadequate window insulation does have its plus sides) listening to Otis Redding...and revising. Shame about the working, but this time tomorrow I can have a bit of a holiday from the work. Can forget about organic materials and superconductors for a while as well.

Awesome tune. Just ordered a best of, Spotify is a wonderful thing. It has led me to many a tune.

Nice little read

The itinerary for my little holiday:

Day 1 New York

The adventure starts in the cosmopolitan metropolis of New York City.

Days 2-3 Washington DC

Admire the capital's grand avenues, parks, monuments and memorials.

Day 4 Appalachian Mountains

Take in the beauty of the soaring Appalachian Mountains.

Day 5 Nashville

Toe-tap to country music in Nashville.

Day 6 Memphis

Choose to visit Elvis' Graceland or head to Beale St for a dose of traditional blues music.

Days 7-8 New Orleans

Straddling the Mississippi, this lively city is known for its spicy cuisine, old-style mansions and atmospheric jazz clubs.

Day 9 Houston

Head to Houston and sign up for an optional trip to the NASA Space Center.

Day 10 San Antonio

Visit the Alamo, a reconstructed 18th century fort, then get to know the canals and streets of San Antonio on a walk.

Day 11 Carlsbad Caverns National Park

HIke deep into the caverns, then in the evening witness a noisy exodus of bats from the caves.

Day 12 Santa Fe

Explore the sandstone Aztec Ruins National Monument.

Day 13 Mesa Verde National Park

Travel to Mesa Verde National Park, best known for its cliff dwellings.

Day 14 Monument Valley

Travel through the desert to meet members of the Navajo tribe.

Days 15-16 Grand Canyon

With photo opportunities galore and the option of a scenic flight, the Grand Canyon is a brilliant sight to behold.

Days 17-18 Las Vegas

Get accustomed to the neon lights and excesses of 'Sin City'. Choose to see a larger-than-life stage show, over-indulge at a buffet or have some fun at a casino table.

Day 19 Sierra Nevada

Travel through the heat of Death Valley to admire the rocky landscapes of the Sierra Nevada.

Day 20-21 Yosemite National Park

Discover huge cliffs, sparkling waterfalls and iconic wildlife in Yosemite National Park.

Days 22 San Francisco

Finish this awesome roadtrip in America's majestic bay city and perhaps visit infamous Alcatraz.

Cannae wait. So much work and revision to do before then though! Need to practice my moves as well if I'm going to pull this off:

Happy days

No more labs...ever! Handed in organic this morning, so no more teaching lab for me! Lets just forget that the majority of next year is based on the research project, it doesn't count as the same...also should try and forget about the exam on Friday...

Can't decide if this is good or not. I am a fan of random cover versions though. Speaking of which...

Was trying to find the other version the Manics did of this song, but JDB + acoustic is always fairly amazing. Just goes to show that even the most pathetic excuses for music can be made good by someone with talent. Might put some effort into making a playlist or something of cover versions, they pass the time well.

Route

Just a short trip across the USA. Hitting some awesome places, and a fair few campsites along the way.
Hells yeah.

No going back now!

Booked up my American adventure, which is slightly terrifying. Flights booked, road-trip booked, accomodation in New York booked, insurance sorted, visa equivalent done. All that is left to do is sort out something for staying in San Francisco. Ever so slightly excited. Lots of good planning days to come, need to sort out what I'm doing in New York for the day, same goes for San Francisco. Downside is having to work out the money - not going to be a cheap trip.

Guess more details will appear in the not too distant future!

Lazy Sunday

Can tell the end of term is coming up, I've actually got time to chill and not do work for a day! Wow. Feel that I didn't really get the love for Just Like Fred Astaire across as much as I should the other day. Absolutely brilliant song, even if it is a bit soppy. Don't make 'em like that any more.

Watched Four Lions yesterday. Was pretty good I spose. Thought the ending was a bit grim, not sure if it matched the tone of the rest of the film. Worth a watch anyway.

Keeping an eye on the footy, got a whole £2.50 on the Spurs game, what a wild bet that was! I'm throwing caution to the winds! Its all to help fund a memory upgrade for the computer though (how cool) so all worth it in the end.

Still not made my mind up about the trip across America. On one hand, it will be an amazing experience I might not have the time to fit in again, on the other hand it will cost a lot of money that might mean the trip to Costa Rica will be even less likely. I just don't know. Would like to have a look at the USA though. This trip has a good few days of visiting the musical places and also a day in Houston. Just not sure if the driving will cut too much into time to appreciate where you are. Should be pretty brilliant scenery out the window though.

Crappy labs are back again tomorrow. These have single-handedly turned me off organic chemistry forever. To be honest though that wouldn't take much more than the boring lecture course but the whole thing is a shambles for something that counts for a fairly decent amount of this year. The weekend should be good though. Got a friend from back home coming up which will make for a nice change. Going to be checking out Durham Live Lounge for Detroit Social Club so heres hoping they are at least decent!

I see spending out in my future

Since Monday I am 21 and fed up of not doing anything. This summer is looking long and empty, but there are so many places I'd like to go and things I'd like to do...this has bought me to considering a good old American road-trip. Would be fairly amazing, however can't really do this one on impulse unlike the trip to the Chimp sanctuary in Spain...

I really am tempted, I've got some money saved up for travelling somewhere. Seems a bit short notice though for something so hugely different to anything I've ever done. Spending 22 days on the other side of the world is a fairly massive undertaking...just trying to get my thoughts straight on this.

I've worked my arse off every year since sodding GCSE's, so I think its about time I went for the extravagant gesture. Would be nice to have someone to go with, but then part of the fun is meeting new people. Lots of camping out, seeing the world...Memphis and Nashville. Sadly no wild west type stuff where I'm looking, but I guess the scenery is all there.

Watch this space I suppose.

Mate

No video this time, just link to proper chilled track: HERE

Anyway. Nowt much been happening in life. Another lab report has bit the dust, sadly back in the organic labs next week - lots of crap hanging over there. Got my dissertation mark back, 68%. Not bad, would have liked higher though. Not had any of my lab reports back from physical labs this term (well, I've got one but the mark isn't written on it which is helpful) so no idea how thats going. Not had much stuff back this year, would be nice to know roughly how things are going.

Bloody sick of this dingy room. The light is crap, keeps doing my eyes in. Can't really read anything in here cos there just isn't enough light. Ah well. Hopefully this weekend I'll be back home, all depends on Dads card turning up after a slight cock-up with the train tickets.

Trying to decide if I should go kayaking tomorrow. Would quite like to, but might just power through the longer lab report I've got to hand in next week so theres nothing at the back of my mind when I'm at home. Not feeling anything at the minute. Just feel tired and fed-up the whole bloody time. Definitely in need of a holiday.

Let the good times roll...

Sunday, 20 February 2011

Oooh...

Big day tomorrow, finally getting my dissertation mark back. It counts for bugger-all towards my degree, but would like to get a good mark after all the bloody work that went into it.
Got the netbook all sorted out for the train journey home on Friday. Well, I have a mobile internet stick and the A-Team on the hard-drive. Going to be a wonderful journey.

Four weeks left of term! Crazy.

Saturday, 19 February 2011

Made some purchases

Been spending the ole birthday money before I even get it - had a crappy week though so felt like cheering myself up. Ordered the following:

DVD - Fight Club, A-Team seasons 4 and 5
Blu-Ray - District 9, Kick Ass
Stereophonics summer 2010 tour t-shirt

Only shame is I can't watch the blu-rays whilst up North. Will have a busy first few days at home methinks. Tempted by an A-Team t-shirt as well...I like having stuff like that for bumming around the house in.

Seems that posting a music video has become obligatory on here, so what to choose for today?

Fucks sake wireless...

Was absolutely made up when Pulp announced live dates for this summer. Was too young to see them the first time round, so finally here was my chance! Utter bollocks though that they're playing the massive chav-fest that is Wireless. Nevertheless, I bought my ticket. Figured that if they managed to get Pulp they must be able to get a half decent line-up for the rest of the day. Oh how I was wrong.

TV on the Radio, Foals, The Horrors, Metronomy.

Shitting hell. What a sad little collection. Everything thats wrong with music in one day. Just hope that Pulp do some warmup shows so I can ditch the Wireless tickets and just have a night of good music.

Oh well. Will all be worth it if Pulp pull it off.

After all, Jarvis is the man.

Sunday, 13 February 2011

Another Sunday gone....

Just been checking on the TCT tickets...all shows still available, goes to show how weak it is this year! At least one date sold out ridiculously fast the past four years I've been. Theres no bands there I would want to see, but I was expecting more than that, especially for the Beady Eye night. Not been impressed by them at all so far, but Noel managed to sell out two nights in minutes from what I remember so was expecting something similar to happen here just from Oasis fans wanting to see Liam. Guess he really misjudged peoples desire to listen to his John Lennon impression.

Anyway, used my Tesco voucher to invest in some Kopparberg, so might have to crack a can of that open now. Been watching the A-Team and writing up bad lab reports today. It is has been productive on both fronts, just need to read through tomorrows lab and I can go to bed with a clear mind.

Good ole Johnny. Thats one hell of a voice, and one hell of a tune. Don't make 'em like that any more! Doesn't have much to do with anything else, but its what I'm listening to at the mo.

Heres to next week!

Saturday, 12 February 2011

Well...

...if we're talking songs with a bloody good build-up, I spose I should leave this here:

...

Just cos I was listening to this song when I had to a put a title on the blog...

Gotta love a song with that kind of build-up...

Hells yeah

Been a good couple of days. Went off to Middlesborough last night to see Feeder, the set was a bit heavy on naff Renegades tracks, and there were slightly too many knob-heads jumping on top of people for my liking, but overall was very, very good night. Got a good little group of people going on now, so was a nice vibe. Even the bus was free so can't complain about any of it really.

Then onto today...not really done anything today but I've sent off my CV for some possible summer work (tells you how shit getting a job is when thats a good thing) and then won a grand total of £9.71 on the footy/rugby. Nice wins there for Spurs and Wales, so all very good indeed!

Got a bottle of Jack Daniels and some Dr Pepper (needs must!) to make tonight that little bit better. Good times. Not felt this positive since coming back this term. Bout time things started looking up.

(Been buying too many gig tickets this week. Carl Barat, TCT comedy night and Turin Brakes at Bishop's Stortford for no apparent reason have left a nice hole in the pocket).

Sunday, 6 February 2011

Head full of disease

Woopee, about to start another week of insane working, but this time just to make it more fun I am going to have to put up with being full of contagious disease. Gotta love colds. I can't wait til tomorrow morning when I get to walk for half an hour in the cold so that I can stand around all day doing Chemistry (and it all going wrong - this is labs we're talking about here) and then walk all the way back.

Other bad things? Bloody IAESTE. Should have been a great opportunity to get some work experience abroad, instead I'm given a list of engineering placements and offers that would mean I would be working well into the middle of next year...not the best planning when your company is aimed at students in their penultimate year of study. Can't really skive off for 6 months without it going unnoticed. The careers service also wisely managed to not tell us about some different summer placement work until after the deadline had gone - which was good of them.

But lets not think about that. Lets think about the positive things in life, mainly the announcement tomorrow of the Teenage Cancer Trust gigs line-up. Why is this so good?

Truely brilliant, brilliant music. Been to these gigs for the past four years now, and they have been some of the best nights of my life (apart from Paul Weller - couldn't have been more boring if he tried). Hoping to go again this year, so fingers crossed for another brilliant line-up. The way things have been going though, I wouldn't be surprised if it sucks. That would be a kick in the teeth, but it would save some money.

(Just remembered more reasons to be cheerful, Arsenal's monumental cockup yesterday, Man U losing to the team at the bottom of the table and Chelsea going the same way too....oh how I laughed).
